Certified Personal
Trainer Module 1
- Course Content
The CPT Program has been developed by the
Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP).
Module 1 of the CPT course teaches you to
administer the Canadian Physical Activity, Fitness and Lifestyle Approach
(CPAFLA). The CPAFLA was
developed in response to the latest research which identifies the health
benefits of moderate physical activity and the relationship between lifestyle behaviours and health.
The CPAFLA includes:
- pre-test screening: administering the PAR-Q; consent
form, preliminary instructions for the participant; taking resting heart
rate and blood pressure;
- anthropometry: standing height; weight; girths;
skinfolds;
- modified Canadian Aerobic Fitness Test (mCAFT): rehearsal;
stepping; post-stepping;
- muscular strength and force; flexibility and
endurance: grip strength; push-ups; trunk forward flexion; partial curl-up;
vertical jump.
You must pass the written and practical exams to
complete the CPAFLA portion (Module 1) of the CPT certification. The written exam format is multiple choice. A passing
mark 80% or higher is required. To pass the practical evaluation, you must
demonstrate proficiency in administering the CPAFLA, making needed
calculations, interpreting test results, and counselling the client toward
greater health and fitness.

The CPAFLA is based on the
assumption that people are at various stages of readiness with regard to
making attitudinal (how people think and feel about physical activity,
exercise and fitness) and behavioural (action-oriented) changes in their
lives and recognizes that a number of health determinants, client awareness,
knowledge and attitudes must be addressed prior to implementing
action-oriented interventions. The CPAFLA provides you with tools to assist
the client in a process of change designed to increase or improve healthy
lifestyle behaviours and physical activity levels.
The certifications of the
Atlantic CSEP H&FP are nationally recognized and transferable across Canada.
