What is the NFLA?

The National Fitness Leadership Alliance (NFLA) is a Canadian partnership of not-for-profit organizations dedicated to developing, promoting and implementing national standards for training and certification of fitness leaders in Canada.

  • British Columbia/Yukon - British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association (Fitness Branch)
  • Alberta/North West Territories - Alberta Fitness Leadership Certification Association
  • Saskatchewan - Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (Fitness Division)
  • Manitoba - Manitoba Fitness Council
  • Ontario - Ontario Fitness Council
  • New Brunswick - Fitness New Brunswick
  • Prince Edward Island - Island Fitness Council
  • Nova Scotia - Nova Scotia Fitness Association

The Canadian Standard for Fitness Leadership and Certification

Mandate

  • To provide a formal network for Provincial/Territorial fitness delivery agencies across Canada.
  • To promote to general customers, leaders and organizations that hire certified leaders, a strong National and Provincial perspective of fitness leadership in Canada.
  • Each individual Provincial/Territorial fitness delivery agency will serve as the formal, coordinating fitness leadership certification and registration mechanism of the NFLA.

Functions

  • To develop and maintain the NFLA exams, standards, guidelines and evaluation tools.
  • To develop and implement a national communication strategy.
  • To identify and address common issues of concern and challenges to fitness leadership in Canada.
  • To encourage the coordination and collaboration of resource development and distribution.
  • To act as an advocate for fitness leadership at the National level.
  • To develop and maintain a liaison with Health Canada.

The NFLA partners currently offer recognized Fitness Leader Certification/Accreditation training in a variety of group and individual specialties such as:

  • Strength/Resistance Training
  • Aquatic Fitness
  • Older Adult Fitness
  • Adapted Fitness
  • Individual Fitness/Personal Training
  • Trainer of Fitness Leaders
  • Evaluator of Fitness Leaders
  • Supervisor of Fitness Leaders

The NFLA partners also provide the following to their current Fitness Leaders:

  • Transferability of certification to all NFLA partners.
  • Listing on NFLA partners Provincial central registry.
